Has Sara Gone Crazy?
Team in Training Mission:
To raise over $1 million dollars this year to help researchers find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Sara's mission: 1) Do everything I can to help Team in Training accomplish their goals. 2) Do everything I can to help Scottie Maier and his family win his battle with cancer. 3) Run, walk, or crawl to finish the Chicago Marathon! MY HERO - Scottie Maier My fundraising efforts are going to support Scottie Maier and his family. Scottie began as a Team in Training runner in 1992 when he and his friend decided they wanted to run the Columbus Marathon. Scottie helped raise money for a young boy suffering from leukemia. That boy lost his fight with cancer, but Scottie's hard work had raised money for research and to help improve the lives of those with cancer. By 1995 Scottie was Co-Chairman of Team in Training. During that time he joined the Board of Trustees for the Southern Ohio Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America as well as remaining Co-Chairman of Team in Training. He eventually became Treasurer for the Southern Ohio Chapter and finished numerous marathons for Team in Training. In 2002 Scottie thought he had ulcers and was seeking treatment for some relief of the pain he was having in his stomach. On July 8, 2002 he was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma, a terminal illness. Scottie is now involved in a national study (that is getting research dollars from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) to hopefully find a cure for blood-related cancers. What you should know about leukemia and related cancers: * LEUKEMIA and LYMPHOMA are the leading fatal cancers of people under 35. * It is estimated that LEUKEMIA and its allied cancers, HODGKIN'S DISEASE, LYMPHOMA and MYELOMA, strike some 107,900 Americans each year and kill 60,500 people. These totals account for 11% of cancer cases. * 5,000 Ohio residents will be diagnosed with LEUKEMIA, LYMPHOMA, HODGKIN'S DISEASE and MYELOMA this year, and approximately 2,800 of our friends, relatives and state residents will die from these diseases. * LEUKEMIA is the number one disease killer of children between the ages of 1 and 14. * The overall 5 year survival rate has tripled in the past 40 years for leukemia patients, from 14% in 1960, to 35% in the 70's, to 44% today. |
